Holidays are almost over
Christmas is over, we had some wonderful days here at home with my sister and nephew. As usual I cooked Christmas dinner, this year a deboned stuffed turkey. For the last many years we´ve had duck, as it´s the tradition in my husbands family. I´m not fond of duck, at least not those fat farm ones you can buy frozen everywhere up to Christmas. They are cheap, however.
The kids also wanted to try out something else, and in my family we always had turkey. So turkey it was. The stuffing made the meat tender but not dry, and the deboning was pretty easy with YouTube on a phone next to the “operating table”.
My sister and nephew were meant to stay a day more, however they decided to leave early to visit my mum. She celebrated Christmas Eve with my brother and his family.
Instead of going with my husband to his family´s annual Christmas lunch on Christmas Day, I decided to stay at home. This year the lunch took place in a rented summer house, so they would not come home until Boxing Day – late.
Meaning… I had 24hrs all to myself. The house was a mess, so I cleaned and cleaned and was finally ready to get my feet up after some days with heavy activity.
Although the fridge was full of leftovers, I ordered myself a pizza and opened a bottle of red wine. The tv was all mine, that was pure pleasure.
A sick cat
The cat got sick that same night. I woke up early to a horrible stench from the litter box. There was crap and pee everywhere. After cleaning and receiving the family, we decided to take the cat to the vet the next day when he opened. Unfortunately he didn´t until late afternoon, so I was worried sick all day. The cat was so poorly, that we prepared her grave in the garden, convinced the vet would want to euthanize her.
Fortunately, he was in a good mood and cheacked her thoroughly. She´s 17 and an old lady. However, she still has all her teeth and the eyes are still bright. The vet found a large wound on the back of her tongue, thats why she´s been losing weight and wouldn´t eat the dry food but only spoon-food for some time. She also stopped grooming herself. I´ve checked her mouth several times, but never that far back, that´s why I didn´t discover it.
Now, on penicillin, she´s much better. I hope she´ll make it through the winter and see another spring in some months.
New Year and resolutions
This year has been our “Annus Horribilis”. No doubt about that.
We both lost our jobs. We faced identity, marital and econimal crisis. We still have our good health, but there always room for improvement. I started smoking, have been drinking far too much wine and have given up on exercising. All three things must be changed, So no more cigarettes, take a dry january and begin cycling or running again. I know that most new year´s resolutions fail, but mine will not. I´m quite good at keeping my resolutions whenever I decide for a change.
Since I was laid off I have suffered from heavy insomnia. Most nights I wake up at 3am, however now it´s already at 1am and I cannot fall asleep again. Writing this, its 4.50am and I´m not tired at all. The little one, came to sleep with us in the around midnight. Three in a queen size bed is not optmal either. So I got up at 3.15, fed the cat and smoked a cigarette. Most nights I toss and turn in bed, unable to find peace and rest. Maybe it´s the menopause setting in, maybe it´s just all the worries making me upset. Maybe it´s the wine I drink at night or my husband snoring next to me…
Anyway, at night it´s time for reading newspapers online on my phone. After reading The Guardian, The Telegraph and The Times, where I have a subscription to all, I normally feel tired and can sleep for an hour or two, before its time to get up.
I do not sleep during the day, it would completely ruin my daily routines. At night after dinner, I´m just looking forward to see my bed. Meetings and socialising after 8pm are a real pain, I cannot focus and concentrate. During the day it´s ok, after all it´s not been so many years since I had small children keeping me up at night.
But I´m 10-15 years older now, and not being able to sleep takes its toll. Celebrating tonight will only happen with a few energy drinks also.
A new beginning
I´m looking forward to a new year. Celebrating with good friends and good food will be nice. We will celebrate at our house, and after midnight we usually have all the neighbours over for drinks (gin, gin gin) and snacks.
But I cannot wait to see what the new year brings us. I´m really curious and expectant – full of hopes for better things to come.
I wish you all a happy new year!
