This week my husband finally went on vacation. The kids have been on summer holiday for more than two weeks now. We decided to go to my hometown Sønderborg (Sonderburg) for a few days to visit my mum.
Sonderburg is a very lovely harbour town, located in the south of Denmark, close to the German border.
The new hotel with the outlook restaurant
The old castle, now a museum, is certainly worth a visit.
King Christian II
King Christian II was imprisoned at the castle 1532-40. Legend says he walked round a round table day in and day out, leaving a deep groove from his thumb in the table. Not true, however a good story… Although he was not allowed to leave his room, he was well fed, drank plenty of wine and had his personal waiters with him.
Anyway, the castle is very impressive and has played a big role in the history of the duchy of Schleswig, which is now southern Denmark and northern Germany.
This time, we spent must time on the beach. The boys are very fond of the sea and are all good swimmers and in general they are more in the water than on the beach. Morning swims, mid day swims and evening swims with water temperature around 20°C …
Even my mum who is 79 and has two knee replacements and lost a breast to cancer, went into the water for a swim. Very impressive! My mum is very cool compared to others that age, and I love her very much ❤
One evening, we saw 3-4 harbour porpoises hunting in the shallow waters in the bay. A rather rare and absolutely stunning sight…

At Vemmingbund beach
Now we are back home in Brande again, the washing machine running on overload and we’re all just relaxing in the garden… although I still need to look for jobs.
